Exam scheduling guide
When to schedule
Start scheduling 60–90 days before your target exam window. Pearson VUE seats fill faster than most candidates expect.
Avoid scheduling within two weeks of a major life event (move, wedding, leave start), even if you feel ready.
How to register · ASWB (LMSW / LCSW)
Register through your state board first; they authorize you for the exam, then you schedule with Pearson VUE.
ASWB exam fee: $230 (Bachelors/Masters/Clinical). State board fees vary.
How to register · NBCC (NCE / NCMHCE)
NBCC handles registration directly through their portal. Once approved, schedule with Pearson VUE.
NCE fee: $195 · NCMHCE fee: $295 (as of 2026).
How to register · AMFTRB (MFT)
Most states use AMFTRB's National MFT Examination. State board approval first, then schedule with Pearson VUE.
Fee: $365 (national exam).
Fee waivers and reduced-fee programs
ASWB offers a one-time $115 fee reduction for candidates demonstrating financial hardship.
Talk to your program coach about whether your milestone-2 PD fund can cover exam fees; in most cases it can.
